The collision was visible across the system, and was detectable several parsecs away with proper instruments. The ship had been accelerating for a long time and had reached a respectable fraction of the speed of light when it hit the planet. Nothing on the surface of the world survived. The ship was more than a little pleased with itself.

The ship woke from stasis a few thousand years later and began to work on finishing the terraforming. It moved from the dense core of the plant and attached itself to the underside of the mantle, creating an access way from a previously active volcano. Mapping satellites were deployed around the planet, and the extent of the collision damage was evaluated. Obvious scars had been left on the world, most notably a huge impact crater on the southern part of the major landmass. Trailing packages had landed as planned and major parts of the biosphere had already been created.

Biological sampling and genetic reconstructions began filling the biosphere with an odd mix of animal and plant life. The founders of this world had decidedly different ideas about their creation. Evolution also acted on these introductions, sometimes in truly odd ways. After the introduction of sentient life, occasional android teachers were introduced to teach various skills. The society created was agrarian but included some unique uses of a technology that had passed the Clarke limit millenia before. The result was a whimsical world and after several wars, a decidedly dangerous one.

A few thousand more years passed and outsiders re-discovered the world. They found it fascinating. Their decision to leave the world as they found it was not entirely voluntary. The ship had expanded it's physical presence as the world became populated, providing a number of services that the vast bulk of the world's inhabitants were completely unaware of. Those that were aware could utilize those services and thought them magical. An even rarer group was fully aware. This group was selected from very intellegent people who knew how to keep a secret.

The maintenance crew interacted with the outsiders when contact was required. They and the entity that had been a starship enforced the rules that had been set over fifteen thousand years earlier. Machines and old men love having a set routine.

Why Maxwell?

As with so many things, there was once a wonderfull kitty. His name was Maxwell, and he was everything a person could want in a cat. He's gone now, but when I first started this world he was very much alive and attended some of our gaming sessions. Everything else in the house belonged to him, it seemed logical at the time.
